GATE Program

Sylvan Union School District
GATE Program

The Sylvan Union School District’s Gifted and Talented Education Program will challenge each student to realize their full development and utilization of superior intellectual powers and abilities, enhancing individual capacity to create a meaningful and successful life, and to provide significant contributions to the American democratic society.

The emphasis of the GATE Program is on teaching and reinforcing skills which gifted students are able and eager to use, but which could disappear if not taught and practiced.  These include the higher levels of Bloom's Cognitive Taxonomy (synthesis, analysis, and evaluation), critical thinking, creative problem solving, group processes, leadership, decision-making, research, independent learning, and goal setting. We encourage the pursuit of excellence through motivation rather than pressure.  Students are helped to realize that a sense of accomplishment and pride derives not from being gifted but from making good use of one’s potential.
